Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has revealed plans to build a new middle school in the Rea Farms area of south Charlotte, which will be part of a larger mixed-use residential development that includes over 900 new homes. The development would be built on mostly vacant land along Tom Short Road and plans for the new school include a track, baseball and softball fields, parking, and a three-story building.
The new middle school is part of CMS’ plan to convert the current Rea Farms STEAM Academy, which is a K-8 school, into a full K-8 magnet. This move is in response to feedback from families who prefer their 6th to 8th grade students attend traditional middle schools. The new school is expected to alleviate overcrowding at Community House Middle School and Jay M. Robinson Middle School.
This new middle school is listed as a $73 million line item on a list of CMS projects associated with a proposed 2023 bond and is expected to be funded by the real estate deal made to build a new high school.
Boundary discussions for the new school are expected to resume this spring, so homeowners in south Charlotte can expect to be updated on the attendance boundaries for the school.
The new middle school in the Rea Farms area is a much-needed solution to the overcrowding issue in south Charlotte schools. This development not only provides students with state-of-the-art facilities to learn and grow, but also offers a sense of relief for parents who want the best education for their children. As a homeowner in south Charlotte, you have the unique opportunity to be a part of this exciting change. So, stay tuned for updates on the attendance boundaries and take advantage of the potential increase in your home’s value.
